Chapter 21

Sabrina huddled in the back of a van.

She could still hear men shouting and running in their hard-soled boots. After finding the parking deck exit closed, she'd tried the door handles on all the nearby vans and found one with an open back door.

She'd climbed inside and locked the door behind her. It was hot and muggy inside even though the parking deck seemed to be partially underground. That meant she still had to be in Texas somewhere, right?

Maybe it didn't mean anything. It was summer. It was hot everywhere in the United States this time of year. But considering the doctor had been evaluating her and the other girls, it stood to reason that she hadn't been shipped to her final destination.

She had no idea how human trafficking worked except that it involved moving people from one point to another. Some went willingly and others like her were kidnapped and sold like slaves.

There was no telling how long it had been since she'd been kidnapped. It could have been hours ago or days ago. It seemed like she would have woken up several times if days had passed. It seemed like she would have vague memories or dreams about being moved around.

She really wanted to open the van door and breathe fresh air. But the men were still nearby. She listened to them talk. They weren't talking in English. It sounded like Spanish, but she couldn't say for sure.

She wasn't even sure she was still in the United States. The men who took her were Hispanic. Maybe they took her into Mexico. It wasn't that far to the border. The American doctor might be a disgraced doctor living in exile. Except he wasn't alive anymore. She'd killed him.

The shouting faded noticeably. Sabrina considered going to the front of the van so she could look out of the windows, but she didn't want to do anything that would make the van move or shake.

Sabrina waited. Sweat trickled down her face. It was so hot she could barely stand it. What felt like an eternity passed and the silence persisted, so she unlocked the back door and opened it. She quietly lay down on the polished concrete floor and looked under the other vehicles. She didn't see any legs or feet.

She was alone in the garage. A sigh of relief escaped her lips. The concrete felt cool against her body, so she lay there for a moment to cool down despite the rapid beating of her heart and the adrenalin pulsing through her veins.

Her mind raced through the chain of events that took her from the examination room to the parking deck. She couldn't recall seeing any other way out of the building. There was surely a front entrance, but it would be a level above her and guarded especially now that they knew she was loose in the building somewhere.

The fact that the men had left meant there were other escape avenues that they were searching. She was surprised that they hadn't searched all of the vehicles in the garage.
